The Liberal Democrats Spring Conference 2025 took place in Harrogate, North Yorkshire this weekend.
The conference was hosted by Harrogate Convention Centre and took place from Friday March 21 to Sunday March 23, beginning with a party rally and ending with a speech by leader Sir Ed Davey.
Speaking to York Vision, the Liberal Democrat MP for Eastbourne, Josh Babarinde, said: “Universities have a responsibility to provide financial support for students.”
Babarinde said the cost of living is hitting students the hardest and revealed that he got into University at LSE through a widening participation scheme and a bursary to help with living costs.
Babarinde said universities: “should take every robust step possible [to help students]”
The Eastbourne MP revealed that the Liberal Democrats want to campaign to improve graduate job access and cited rising National Insurance contributions as leading to reduced graduate opportunities.
He commented: “Students should have their talents and skills recognised.”
Former Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said: “I joined the Liberal Democrats when I was a student.
“I don’t want to be sceptical of students, you are the bright people of the future.”
