Building a Truly Inclusive York – Empowering Voices, Embracing Diversity
Who Am I?
Hello! My name is Sheila Kamanzi, and I am running to be your next Equality and Inclusion Officer. As an MSc Economics and Public Policy student at York, I am deeply passionate about advocating for underrepresented voices and ensuring that our university is a place where every student feels valued, heard, and empowered. Having navigated diverse educational and professional spaces, I understand the challenges many students face in feeling included, respected, and represented.
Why Am I Running?
I believe that inclusion is not just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Many students from marginalized communities, international backgrounds, and diverse identities still struggle with representation, accessibility, and opportunities for meaningful engagement. I want to make sure every student, regardless of background, can thrive at York by championing policies that dismantle barriers and foster a strong sense of belonging.
My Vision: A More Inclusive York for Everyone
As your Equality and Inclusion Officer, I will focus on:
1. Strengthening Representation & Advocacy
- Establish safe spaces for students from underrepresented backgrounds to voice concerns and propose solutions.
- Push for greater representation of diverse voices in University decision-making bodies.
- Collaborate with societies and networks representing marginalized groups to ensure their needs are prioritized in SU policies.
2. Fighting Discrimination & Promoting Inclusivity
- Advocate for zero tolerance policies against discrimination, harassment, and hate speech on campus.
- Work with the University to decolonize the curriculum, making it more reflective of diverse perspectives.
- Push for increased accessibility initiatives, including better support for disabled students and mental health services for minority groups.
3. Celebrating Diversity & Enhancing Community Engagement
- Organize cultural festivals, awareness weeks, and inclusion workshops to promote understanding and allyship.
- Establish mentorship programs connecting students from marginalized backgrounds with professionals in their fields.
- Strengthen community engagement by creating platforms where different student groups can collaborate, share experiences, and build networks.
4. Improving Support Systems for International & Minority Students
- Advocate for increased financial support, cultural integration programs, and networking opportunities for marginalised and international students to enhance their experience at York.
- Ensure that the university provides adequate mental health support that caters to the unique needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
- Collaborate with the SU and University to reduce financial barriers for students from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Why Vote for Me?
- Passion & Experience: My background in public policy and economics has equipped me with the advocacy, negotiation, and leadership skills needed to bring about real change.
- Empathy & Understanding: As someone who has experienced the challenges of adapting to new environments and navigating systemic barriers, I am committed to ensuring that no student feels isolated or unheard.
- Commitment to Action: I don’t just talk about change—I make it happen. I will work tirelessly to ensure that policies benefiting underrepresented students are not just proposed but implemented.
Let’s Build an Inclusive Future Together!
I am here to amplify your voice, advocate for your rights, and create a York where diversity is truly celebrated. Let’s work together to shape a university that is inclusive, fair, and empowering for all.
