York take early Varsity lead

York have taken an early 6-0 lead in White Rose Varsity 2012 against rivals Hull thanks to victories in both karting and golf this week.

On Wednesday, the York karting team beat Hull 20-16 in an entertaining race. Andrew Gilmore drove magnificently to finish in first place and York filled three of the top four positions.

And in the golf on Friday, Tom Mortimer got the ball rolling with a fantastic win followed by Charlotte Austwick with another solid performance.

Chris Forrest was involved in a much tighter match but a quick team talk from Charlotte and Tom helped him regain his focus and he ended up winning 16 and 17 to increase York’s advantage.

And Intisar Ishtiaq held a clinching 4-foot putt to make the win 5-1, just as the sun was setting, to round off an excellent day’s work for York.

After the match, Charlotte Austwick said: ‘I’m really pleased with the team since it was our first competitive match this year as we aren’t in BUCS.’
