York students feature as Radio 1’s ‘New Band of the Week’

University of York band PartyClub have been featured as this week’s BBC Radio 1 ‘New Band of the Week’.

Their single, ‘Young and Free’ has been selected by BBC Introducing to be played across a variety of Radio 1 primetime shows throughout this week. The band consists of Thomas Banks, Alex Beevers, Sam Sackville and Will Cooper, all second-year undergraduates at York.

Lead singer Banks told Vision, “We sent our recording into BBC Radio York and couldn’t believe it when we got an email saying we were to be featured on Radio 1! It’s a massive opportunity for us, it’s already helped us to recruit a lot of new fans and it should help to open doors for us in the coming months. We’ve got our first headline show coming up at The Duchess on Wednesday 20th June so it would be great if this could drum up some support for that as well.”

Radio 1 Drive-time presenter Greg James said of the single, “I love it. PartyClub. This is really good. It’s called Young and Free, I’ve not heard it before. Very very good.”

Listeners across the country have been reacting via text and Twitter with their thoughts on the track:

@astridallan:

@SDawson1994:

@jamiequinn7:

Partyclub will be played on the following BBC Radio 1 shows over the remainder of this week:
Thursday Greg James (1-4pm)
Saturday: Huw Stephens (1-4pm)
Sunday: Edith Bowman (7-10am) & Nick Grimshaw and Annie Mac (10pm-midnight).

  1. AnY chance of a link to the song to be put on here? I keep missing it and can’t find it on YouTube

  2. Sounds great! Theres some awesome new bands coming through in York right now. Its hard to tell whose the best though, maybe panda cubs at the moment but keep it up guys!

  3. I think Radio 1 has already decided which are the better band mate, wouldn’t worry yourself with anyone else!

    I love them. I am a PartyClubber.

  4. You seem to demonstrate an inexorably biased opinion yet i can’t fault your enthusiasm. I think objectively panda cubs have a more mature, crafted sound and obviously have experience on their side. PartyClub undoubtedly possess terrific promise but i wouldn’t jump the gun on this one.

  5. @@daz

    The Panda Cubs have featured on BBC York, are supporting Glasvegas, are headlining York carnival and are doing a BBC live introducing session in June. Lets stop this ‘which band is better’ nonsense when both bands have achieved so much.

  6. that must be the carnival that’s on the same day as beach break live…………oh yeh.

  7. What a clever thing to say! Your profligate use of full-stops to add an element of ironic, sardonic reflection demonstrates a remarkable amount of wit. Are you related to Oscar Wilde?
