The York Men’s first team has beaten Hull across all three weapons at this year’s Varsity, with an overall score of 135-105.
Foil was first, with an uninspiring but steady beginning – after the first four bouts, the score was 20-19 to York. However, the team soon accelerated away from Hull, with Tom Skingle beginning the precedent that would secure the win at 45-35.
Sabre followed and it was quickly apparent how able the team was. A particularly good performance was put in by Tom Jones, with a stunning indicator (hits made vs. hits conceded) of +15, leading the team to a final score of 45-27.
Épée was last, with Ali Cormack scoring the hit that brought York’s total hits against Hull beyond what they could possibly achieve by the end of the match. However, York had to work hard to earn the accolade of a victory in all three weapons, and the much more hotly contended match was won by a mere one point at 45-44.
With this fantastic result, the York Men’s First team is in good stead for their BUCS match against Lancaster this Wednesday.
