UYNC was out in full force in the tent today, enduring 6 and ½ hours of netball to see the four games of the Varsity Tournament. After a solid performance by netball college barbarians, titled by Visions’ Charlotte Ferris as Winter’s Barmy Army, pressure was on for the 3rds.
Despite the absence and injury of the 3rd captain and vice captain, the team obliterated Hull putting in a solid performance, and winning by 30 goals. The final score was 43-13.
The first quarter ended 15-2, a testament to the solid defence of Rachel Bunce GK and Ellie Jones GD who stuck to the hull shooters like glue. Hull rarely had an opportunity to shoot. This consistent play continued into the second quarter, where Alia Khalil GS and Lauren Welch GA scored a beautiful continuous sweep of goals. The second quarter finished 22-6.
The thirds had the largest squad of the day enabling a mid game team shuffle. The shooters of the second half; Rhia Stevens – Leach and Eliza Ackland pretty much paralleled the shooting of the first half; both sets of shooters were on fantastic form. The same can be said for the defence; Abi Barber – Henrie made a smashing come back illness, intercepting the ball continuously to stop the Hull defence from scoring.
The middle court players; Selina Rios , Jane Robertson, Ayesha Cotton and Jade Naylor all played solidly, backing up the defence and attacking with the shooters. York fully deserved their 43-13 victory.
