Students are celebrating today as an email from the university confirms a new Megabusplus route from the university.
The York to London route will now collect students from the university, as well as Leeman Road, from £1.
The route, set to open on May 18, will cover both campuses, Hes Hall, Wentworth and the Library, to London St Pancras.
YUSU President Kallum Taylor said via Facebook: “This is great news for staff and students wishing to travel to London cheaply.
It’s happening more than before, and each time it is no less refreshing to see some student friendly initiative from within the institution without any pressure, or the need for a committee which takes place once every 10 or 12 weeks.”
Laura Watson, ex-James College Chair, told Vision: This new initiative sounds fantastic! It’s a great move to help students travel to London to either go home, complete internships and jobs which will hopefully be more cost-effective than alternative means of travel. I’m looking forward to hearing more information and price plans”
All tickets for the service need to be bought prior to boarding. Passengers can purchase tickets online or from the Information Centre.

It’s not like getting into town to get the bus was ever a massive effort was it?
Six hours on a bus just to get to London? I’d rather pay to get a train then sit with the smelly passengers in an enclosed space for that amount of time.

Choo Choo, are you daft? If you bothered to read the article before projecting your stereotypes and ignorance, you’d see it takes five (at the most, sometimes four) hours to get to London from campus and the travelling is by bus and train connection, NOT a “smelly” enclosed bus. This makes it around double the time of the train only but significantly cheaper. Go back to York St John and learn to read next time.
I’m struggling to see how somebody could complain about this. If you don’t want to use it, don’t use it. It’s a great option for those who can’t afford the ever increases train prices though.
I have overheard several conversations within the library of a rumour that London has now overtaken Tang Hall (and thereabouts, which lacks direct transport other than self propelled options) in terms of its accessibility since these changes have come in. It’s only hearsay (so far), but Kallum Taylor is supposedly offering those disgruntled free lifts to and fro in order to hush up any potential hypocrisy!
tbh Tang Hall isn’t *that* inacessible. The 6 bus, which goes from right next to the small co-op, takes you to Rougier Street which is a three minute walk from the station and the centre of town. It’s not as convenient (or cheap…) as the buses going out of campus, but that’s the price we pay for lower rents in Tang Hall!
