Run with it

Gone are the pastel pinks and neon oranges of summer and in are ladylike neutrals and sophisticated deeper shades. This season’s number one nail colour is a mixture of brown, grey and beige with a hint of purple, and is a much prettier colour than its name – greige- would suggest. Shape wise, this autumn it’s all about long, sleek nails and, if you’re feeling particularly brave, filed to a sharp talon-like point.

The Walls

Length: 2.75 miles

Start & Finish: It doesn’t matter. The part of the walls closest to campus is opposite the Barbican Centre, just up the road from Efe’s.

The distance round the city walls is relatively short, but it’s made harder by the steps that occur every time the walls cross a main road. Steps are tough, but good for you in the long run, as they tone muscles. Once you’ve found the walls it’s pretty hard to get lost again, but one downside is that they can be busy with tourists and walkers, especially at weekends. Run at sunset to escape the crowds and enjoy the views.

Fulford & The Ouse

Length: 5 miles

Start & Finish: At the track.

The run through Fulford to the river and then along towards town is a very pretty run in York. One good point is that it’s not a circular route, which means you can turn back at any point, so the run is as long or as short as you need it to be. It’s relatively flat, although the streets of Fulford can be a bit confusing for first-timers. Google map where you’re going first to avoid getting lost.

Osbaldwick

Length: 3.8/5 miles

Start & Finish: The roundabout at the top of Hull Road

This run is mainly on quiet roads and paths through fields and the nice little village of Osbaldwick, although it runs the risk of being a bit remote, so may not be suitable to run on alone, or at night. It’s also not the best place to get to from the main campus, although it’s just up the road for those who live on Hes East. Not a particularly challenging run as it is fairly flat, but to increase difficulty, running all the way from main campus adds quite a lot of length.

Campus & Hull Road

Length: 4 miles

Start & Finish: University Road, outside Langwith College car park

This run isn’t strictly around campus, but it is very convenient for anyone living on campus or in Badger Hill, as the route can be picked up at any point. It’s fairly flat, with just one hill up Hull Road towards Hes East. It’s also entirely on roads, which some people dislike. Best done early morning or in the evening, when the streets aren’t so full. Also useful to discover such things as the layout of campus and the location of your nearest takeaways.
