Roses: rowing preview

Roses this year for the rowers is taking place on Sunday 29th April at 12pm on the River Lune, aiming to hold on to the winning title success at last year’s match. Due to a lower than normal haul of novices this year and injuries from the womens squad, Lancaster have already forfeited the points for two races, Women’s Novice IV+ (2 points) and Women’s Senior VIII (4 points) and have cancelled the race to be held between the Men’s Beginner VIII (0 points). Despite this there are still another 14 points to be won by UYBC in the following categories: Men’s Novice VIII (2 points), Men’s Senior IV+ (4 points), Women’s Senior IV+ (4 points) and Men’s Senior VIII (4 points).

The two squads attending: the Senior Women (captained by Philippa Maloney) and the Novice Men (captained by Frank Flight) have put in strong performances so far over the season. However, with the majority of racing still to come it will be difficult to predict the results. Obviously, with us being the first sport to compete, we’re hoping to return to York victorious with the full 20 points.

Due to BUCS being held next weekend, our senior men won’t be attending Roses, so the novice men will fill their shoes for the men’s races. The women’s squad were disappointed to not be able to put out a fully fit team but instead will only race the top women’s IV+ consisting of: Elouise Cackett, Elevien Rogers, Catherine Oliver, Laura Mcbooty and Ellie Harrison (cox). People to look out for in the men’s races are our star Estonian rower, Oliver Degerstadt weighing in at 100kg and Paddy Somerville Large our previous novice men’s captain, a notorious capsizer.
