Little Black Book of York: El Gringos

El Gringos – 56 Clarence Street

What’s it good for?: An affordable dish of hearty American or Mexican food

How much does it cost?: If you go on Tuesdays, with the 50% discount it is only about £4 for a main course.

When should i go?: Either for a birthday, celebration meal, or just a trip out with friends.

Situated near to the fire station and the York Dungeons, not far from the centre of town, El Gringos is a fine restaurant serving a combination of American and Mexican food. Officially it is advertised as a TexMex restaurant and bar, but regardless it serves tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere at an affordable price for students.

El Gringos offers you the opportunity to sample some fine food and some added variety to a student diet. I’d recommend it as a place to go with a group of flatmates or other friends, or somewhere to celebrate a birthday as a way to start a memorable night out. The best day to go is Tuesday, as this is student night, where by displaying your university card you can get 50% of all food, a fantastic deal.

Another good option is the early bird deal, which gives you a 25% discount if you order before 6pm on Monday-Fridays, or before 5:30 at weekends. The food is excellent and there is a wide choice, ranging from classic American burgers and steaks, to Mexican favourites such as burritos and fajitas. The selection truly is delightful and there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes.

Just to make it even better the friendly waiting staff add to your experience by providing you with traditional hats, which were sadly too big for my head, but definitely help to add a humorous edge to any night. The interior is rustic and welcoming, complimenting the food and creating a leisurely atmosphere to spend an enjoyable evening. To finish off the evening the bar also sells a range of cocktails, beers and other beverages. This is undoubtedly a restaurant worth a visit.
