The University of York Men’s 1sts Football side will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last week’s defeat against Hull 1sts, as they go in search of their fourth victory of the season tomorrow.
The side, who currently sit top of the table despite their 3-1 defeat at home against Hull, make the trip to Leeds tomorrow, as they face fourth placed Leeds Met Carnegie 4ths, who will be looking to cause an upset against the league leaders.
Three consecutive league victories propelled York to the perfect start to the season, and this was then followed by a convincing 4-0 win over Northumbria 3rds two weeks ago in the BUCS Cup, which has set up an inviting looking second round tie against Newcastle 1sts next week.
Last week’s opponents Hull appear to be the side’s greatest rivals this year as they go in search of the elusive promotion, but Leeds Met are likely to prove yet another testing opponent for the White Rose.
A large part of York’s success has been built around a sturdy defence, which prior to the defeat against Hull had only conceded a single goal in their opening four fixtures. At the other end of the pitch, the side have been in fine form in front of goal, with 16 goals scored in only five games.
In contrast Leeds Met 4ths have struggled defensively, which culminated in the side enduring a thrilling 7-4 defeat to Teeside 1sts in their last outing. Their only victory came through a 2-1 win over local rivals Leeds Trinity 1sts, but the side are yet to keep a clean sheet this term.
York’s Men’s 2nds have also enjoyed an excellent start to the year, as three wins out of three see them sit top of Northern 5B. Tomorrow they face a trip to fourth placed Northumbria 4ths, as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table.
York’s 3rds meanwhile have found life more difficult in Northern 5B, as they sit at the foot of the table with only two points, as a result of their point deduction. Last week they suffered a 2-0 reverse against local rivals York St John 2nds, and tomorrow they face a long trip to second placed Sunderland.
The division though is very close, with only two points separating second place and bottom place, whilst York 2nds sit four points clear at the top of the table after their excellent start.
Finally the Women’s Football 1sts will be looking to record their second win of the season tomorrow when they face bottom side York St John 1sts, who have suffered four defeats out of four.
York currently sit fifth in the table with four points after their promotion last year, and will be looking to establish themselves in a higher division this campaign.
To date they have demonstrated that they possess the ability to compete at this level, but the next stage is to ensure that they are capable of converting solid performances into promising results against the higher calibre of opposition that they now face.
