The men’s futsal team are amongst the sides shortlisted for York Sport Team of the Year at this year’s York Sport Awards. After a brilliant year which saw the side progress through to the semi-finals of the national championships and qualify for the European championships in Malaga this summer, the side appear as one of the favourites for this award.
Their main competitors appear to be the Men’s Rugby 1st XV who have enjoyed an excellent season, which was capped off by promotion and the demolition of Lancaster in Roses. Other notable candidates seem to be the women’s fencing and women’s football sides, both of whom have shone this year.
For Club of the Year there are a number of credible nominations, with riding, boat and lacrosse amongst the societies shortlisted.
Roses player of the tournament Louise Highton is amongst the candidates shortlisted for sportswoman of the year, after her success for both the fencing and water polo sides this year, and is joined by a number of notable candidates including lacrosse player Izzi Mattick and footballer Vicky Decamp.
Tom Brandreth won sportsman of the year last year, but this time around Jonny Sim, Baillie Watterson and Sam Lord appear to be the standout candidates. All the nominees though are very credible candidates, whilst Meg Phillips and Tom Day are amongst the candidates shortlisted for the Services to Sport award.
