Vanbrugh 1sts:
James Wilson – 7
The Vanbrugh ‘keeper captained his side to College Cup glory and crucially saved Tom Day’s penalty, as well as scoring his own. Was solid throughout although his punch could have been better for the Halifax equaliser.
Chris Wignall – 7
Helped keep the Halifax attack quiet and Alex Reid had no luck against him before being hauled off at half-time. One of Vanbrugh’s top players throughout the tournament.
Ziggy Heath – 8
Class at the back. Dominant in the air and didn’t allow Tom Day or Hamish Denham and space to create opportunities. Vision’s man of the match.
Matt Graham – 7
Partnered Heath well at the back, again keeping Halifax’s attacking options under wraps. Made sure that defence dominated attack over the course of the game.
Kieran O’Dwyer – 7
Composed on the ball and quality defensively. Kept cool from the spot and scored the winning penalty to hand his side a memorable College Cup victory.
Johnny Grout – 7
Broke up the play well from his defensive midfield position and prevented Halifax from creating any real clear-cut chances. Replaced by Dan Shepherd late on.
Ben Stanier – 6
Struggled to make much of an impact on the game down the right hand side and didn’t get as much chance as usual to trouble the defence with his pace. Still put in a decent performance.
Phil Taylor – 7
Finished well to score the opening goal and battled well in midfield. A calming influence on the game and deserving of a College Cup triumph. Converted his penalty.
Jon Gill – 7
Controlled the game at times in midfield and created much of Vanbrugh’s play with his passing. Put in some decent balls from the dead ball opportunities he was given. Scored an excellent opening penalty.
Rory Sharkey – 7
Made some troubling runs down the left hand side to trouble the Halifax defence but struggled to create chances. Vanbrugh’s most dynamic player and scored his penalty.
Elliot Ross – 6
Held up the ball well up front and provided the assist for Taylor’s goal. Aside from this struggled to put his stamp on the game with any efforts on goal but worked hard for his team.
Substitutes:
Tom Parish – 5
Didn’t get much time to make an impact and was largely anonymous after coming on.
Dan Shepherd – 5
Only played a few minutes but was solid in place of Grout in the holding midfield role.
Halifax 1sts:
Jonny Sim – 7
Was commanding when coming to collect long balls and never made a mistake. Was beaten by a good finish from Phil Taylor for Vanbrugh’s goal but will be disappointed not to have saved a penalty.
Ash Daly – 7
Scored the crucial equaliser with a good finish from outside the box to take the game into extra time and characteristically passed the ball well from both right back and the midfield role he took up later.
Tom Patrickson – 6
Good in the air and generally solid at the heart of the Halifax defence. Ross struggled to get much change out of the big defender.
Dan Turley – 6
Again solid and helped keep Ross subdued. Went about his work quietly and effectively for the most part of the game.
Matt Darling – 6
Made the odd mistake with his distribution but generally passed well from left back. Didn’t allow Ben Stanier to get into his stride and trouble with his trademark runs.
Dan Jones – 5
Largely ineffective and was unable to make a mark on the game. Kept very quiet by the superior Kieran O’Dwyer at left back for Vanbrugh.
Gio Pilides – 6
Decent in midfield without his regular partner Matt Mawdesley. Put his penalty right in the bottom corner but to no avail in the end.
Jack Beadle – 7
Made some troubling runs from midfield and passed the ball well but couldn’t create the required opportunities for his side. Looked gutted at the final whistle.
Alex Reid – 5
Never really troubled Vanbrugh’s defence and was replaced at half-time to allow Ash Daly to move into midfield.
Tom Day – 6
His touch was good up front for Halifax but he couldn’t get himself any goal scoring chances. Will be most disappointed to have seen his penalty saved.
Hamish Denham – 6
The trademark long throw occasionally troubled Vanbrugh and helped set up the equaliser. Had one decent long range strike in the first half was was kept quiet after this.
Substitutes:
Jonny Williamson – 5
Came on at half-time for Alex Reid to play at left back but was put under pressure by Sharkey’s pace.
