College Cup Countdown: Langwith 1sts

Name: Matt Jones

Team captained: Langwith 1sts

How have your team’s performances been in autumn and spring term?
We failed to earn a single point in either term, which I think is a university record. We’ve had flashes of good play, winning the second half against James and being a penalty miss from a point in our first game, but have generally let ourselves down with defensive lapses, tired midfields and a lack of an out-and-out striker, plus most of our younger players seem to go home or get too drunk on weekends.

What are your team’s strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths are the confident passing game we can sometimes find, but primarily it’s our goalkeeper the Cheshire Cat. Our main weakness has been a lack of available or sober players, but this will change in the midweek games so I’m pretty optimistic about our chances.

How strong is your cup squad?
We’ll have a far stronger squad than we’ve been used to on the grass, with some new faces in defence and a strong looking attack.

Who would you call your ‘key player’ and why?
Kris ‘The Cat’ Cheshire who has been absolutely outstanding in goal and we can’t quite understand how he’s not been recognised more by the top uni teams.

What are your thoughts on your team’s group draw? Which game are you most looking forward to?
Whichever other 1sts team we were drawn with would probably expect to beat us, but we’ll be much stronger this term and so we’re looking forward to springing a few surprises. The Wentworth 2nds game should see us set the record straight from last year’s debacle.

If you could beat any team in the final, who would it be and why?
Langwith 3rds JFTB

What will you do to celebrate if you win the cup?
Wake up.

If you could change one thing about the college cup, what would it be?
Honestly wouldn’t change anything it’s one of the highlights of the year.

Who is your team ‘BNOC’ and why?
Our ‘firm’ is known throughout Yorkshire for its terrifying nature. Our 12th man may be our best player.

Which team in world football are you most like?
American Samoa

What are your expectations and ambitions for College Cup 2013?
Prove ourselves in the group stage, then take it one game at a time in the knockout rounds of the cup and try and cause some upsets. We’re feeling confident.

Vision says:
After underwhelming performances in the first two terms, Langwith will be hoping to record their first points of the football season in the college cup, something they are certain to achieve. The key games will be against the 2nds teams, Alcuin and Wentworth, who will be looking to usurp Langwith and qualify for the Cup knockouts, while Derwent and James are both dangerous 3rds teams in the very open Group 1.
