Langwith stole the show in the opening round of college basketball fixtures with a stunning 27-13 victory over rivals Derwent in the tent on Sunday evening, to provide themselves with a perfect start to the season. Derwent however will be disappointed to have succumbed to such a heavy opening day defeat, and will be looking to bounce back over the next few weeks.
There were also wins for James and Goodricke, whilst Alcuin and Halifax’s game was finished early at half-time with Halifax in the ascendancy due to a lack of time, and will be completed at a later date.
The closest contest was a thriller between Goodricke and Vanbrugh, which eventually saw the college from Heslington East prevail by the narrowest of margins, emerging 33-32 winners after a thrilling encounter, which saw both teams play some superb basketball.
James also emerged victorious in the opening round of fixtures, as they prevailed in a high scoring encounter against Wentworth. Both offences impressed throughout the contest, but eventually it was James who were given the honour of moving second in the table as they won 38-33.
The next round of fixtures will be played on Sunday, with a thrilling encounter in store between the two colleges from Heslington East, Langwith and Goodricke. James meanwhile will be looking to extend their winning run as they play Halifax, whilst the other four colleges will be seeking to notch up their first win of the season.
