BUCS women’s volleyball: York 1sts 3-0 Hull 1sts

There is nothing like volleyball to make you doubt the laws of gravity.

Today saw the women’s volleyball team take a comfortable 3-0 victory against local rivals Hull. The result means York remain unbeaten since their first match of the season and are through to the next round of the BUCS Northern Conference Cup.

A cagey start to the match left the scores tied at 6-6 in the first set, before York kicked on and took a 15-9 lead. The next point saw York win a battle of attrition, wearing the opponents down with Kovacova landing the final crushing blow. This monumental point inspired York and they dominated the remainder of the set, winning ten out of the last eleven points to take the set 25-10.

Some rousing words from the Hull captain saw them fly out of the gates to lead 7-3 in the second set. York responded by calling a time-out which turned the tide of the set.

Some magnificent play from the gazelle-like Yeung helped York to win the next ten points on the bounce. Some sterling defence from the home side was the clear difference between the sides, with York repelling attack upon attack from Hull. York’s Fantastic home support gave them impetus to go onto claim the second set 25-16.

The third and final set was the most enthralling of the match. It was neck-and-neck throughout the entire set, with neither side managing to pull away. With the scores tied at 24-24, York played some outstanding defensive work to marginally take the set 26-24.

After a terrific performance from her team, captain Widerhofer was ecstatic. Many of the team’s reserves had been brought in for today’s encounter and the skipper said that they had “incorporated into the team well,” and was glad that they still managed “to win successfully.” After this drubbing it will be hard to see many sides getting a win against York for the remainder of the season.
