Ziggy’s nightclub was evacuated last night during a fire scare. At about 12.30 am, unsuspecting students broke out in panic as the basement dance floor was engulfed in smoke.
Fire engines, police and ambulance services arrived at the scene promptly. York Fire Department sent all two of their fire engines to the scene, although a further two are kept in Acomb. The fire department have confirmed last night’s rumours that a pyrotechnic, or ‘smoke grenade’, was responsible for the large amounts of smoke, although the fire alarm was set off manually.
Krystian Groom, a first year History and Politics student, spoke to Vision about his experience in Ziggys last night. Krystian was in the basement at the scene of the incident. He told vision: “It was really pretty scary, me and my friends genuinely thought there was a fire! Whoever did it is a complete [idiot], not only did they waste the emergency services’ time but someone could have been really hurt. Everyone was pushing and trying get up the stairs as quickly as they could.”
Ziggy’s have issued the following statement since the incident last night: “A smoke grenade was set off last night, we would like to thank everyone for their orderly evacuation of the building. We would like to apologise for the actions of the few spoiling the enjoyment of many.”
Rumours have circulated that an individual in the rugby team was responsible for the incident during their ‘Vietnam Social’, notoriously one of the “messiest” socials of the year.
Club Manager, Richard Fleming, has since added the folowing statement: “I would like to express my disappoinment that some one would choose do this, but at this time I would not like to comment or speculate as to who was responsible. As I understand, YUSU are looking into the matter.”
Fleming assures Vision that Ziggy’s “strives to be a safe and friendly enviroment for students to enjoy and will continue with diligence to stamp out this type of behavior.”
Vision will continue to update on the story as new details come to light.
Standard rugby team behaviour, always ruining nights out for other people. As long as they’re all having a ‘banterous’ time it’s all good yahh?
Not entirely fair, smokey joe, to generalise about the complete rugby club because of one guy’s actions, especially as we don’t even know if it was a member of the rugby club who did this for sure. I have friends in the club and if it was a member then i can assure you they are all as annoyed at him for being so irresponsible and dangerous but also for damaging the club’s already tainted image. I can further suggest that if it is found to be a member of the club he will be in as much trouble from them as anybody.
@Anonamous – I think you make a valuable point. It was certainly not my intention to lay blame to the entire rugby squad. I have specifically used the word ‘individual’, and as you say, for now it remains a rumour. Either way this behaviour cannot go unnoticed!
@Will Thorman. I had no issue with the original article but in fact with the first comment on the article. thanks for taking the time to reply though.
Unfortunately Bruno Mars was not around to catch the grenade …… shame someone else ruined it for everyone! x
The grenade is a good shout…
