Alternative Freshers Week

Freshers Week with your college is a great experience, but there are plenty of other options if you grow tired of the typical Freshers routine, as you’re soon to find out…

Monday 8th – Experience one of York’s amazing tea shops. Betty’s is by far the most famous, but from the Little Shambles Tea Room to Bullivant of York, there’s one to suit everyone.
Also, you heard it here first; meals at the Slug and Lettuce (also Vodka Revolution) are 50% off on Mondays. It’s ridiculously good value and the perfect way to start your alternative Freshers week.

Tuesday 9th – For a friendly but mentally stimulating warm up before your studies begin, go to the Pivni Pub Quiz just off the Shambles in town. Alternatively, go to Glam Rock Tuesdays at Blind Swine for high end rock’n’roll cocktails.

Wednesday 10th – Chill out with some live Jazz at the Phoenix Inn just inside the city walls, if you miss it this time, their jazz evenings are every Wednesday and Sunday all year round.
If you want something a little more upmarket, go for Cocktails at Evil Eye while your student loan’s still fresh – come December you’ll be regretting not having had more of the Drunk Monks while you could afford them.

Thursday 11th – Enjoy some local musicians; maybe even have a go yourself at a lively open house session at the Black Swan for just £2.

Friday 12th – Big Boy Bloater + Jon Amor Blues Group is a gig at The Duchess not to be missed. With fans including Jools Holland, Craig Charles and Mark LaMarr, blues and soul aficionados should buy their tickets now.
A lively alternative is BANGARANG at Stereo, a club night playing Jamaican Ska, rocksteady, reggae and roots until 2am for just £3.

Saturday 13th – For a club night playing indie, motown, rock’n’roll classics, and indie dance and dubstep, hit up Stone Love at Fibbers. Guaranteed cheap drinks and great music.

Sunday 14th – After all that, you’ll be needing a decent recovery lunch. Go to York favourite, the Charles XII just outside campus for a cheap and huge roast with all the trimmings.

General Tips:

If it’s sunny outside and you’re feeling rough after a night out, explore Rowntree Park, the prettiest hidden away park in York. Take a couple of slices of bread to feed the doves, if you’re lucky, they’ll perch on your shoulder.

Walk off a hangover along the City Walls with some friends for beautiful views and fresh air.

If it’s rainy, go to the Pivni pub, hidden away near the Shambles and play board games while enjoying gorgeous local ale or incredibly strong fruity cider and a delicious Pivni Pie.

Get a team together and live all your Call of Duty fantasies with Laser Tag in Clifton Moor.

Take advantage of your free film entitlement as a fresher at City Screen Cinema.

  1. Don’t bother with laser tag (or Quasar as it’s known), it’s pretty awful, they have people in their who ensure that no fun is allowed. I got told off for walking too fast.

  2. Hello there, You’ve done an excellent job. I will certainly digg it and personally recommend to my friends. I am sure they will be benefited from this web site.
