Tonight was the opening night of the University of York’s Shakespeare society play Julius Caesar. It’s safe to say I am completely overwhelmed by what I have just witnessed but in the best possible way.
Set in a University in the late 1990s, this twist on a Shakespearean classic included all the core themes yet amplified them to a point where the audience couldn’t help but be gripped.
With graphic and emotional scenes yet also moments of tender friendship the cast did a great job of toying with our emotions.
Staying true to the plot and the Shakespearean verse, the amount of work that all would have had to put into this show is evident. The show was directed by Katie Leckey and produced by Tegan Steward.
With long monologues, deep character interactions and cleverly choreographed scenes everyone should be very proud of what they have created.
The play is set in Rome at a time when Caeser has just defeated Pompey in the Student Union elections and is ruling as President. A conspiracy is about that Caeser’s days are numbered and with large discontent amongst the student body, the plot erupts from this point onwards.
Julius Caesar is running between the 3rd and the 5th of February in Central Hall. Tickets can be bought here and range between £5 and £7. Go buy them now! You don’t want to miss out!
