York’s New Executive Board Appointments

The University of York has appointed two new members to its Executive Board. 

Nigel Alcock has been appointed as Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFO) and Vicki Goddard has been appointed as Chief Academic Services Officer (CASO).

Alcock who joined the Board in September 2024 will be responsible for overseeing financial and operational functions at the University including HR, IT, Estates and Campus Services, External Relations and Governance and Assurance. 

When joining York, Alcock said: “After a wide-ranging commercial career, I have found the higher education sector to be rewarding and enjoyable, as well as a refreshing change. 

“It’s great to be joining a fantastic University with an inspiring vision.”

Alcock has previously served at board level in financial governance and strategic and operational management for the last 17 years including as Chief Financial Officer at Energetics and as Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer at Coventry University.

Before Alcock, the University of York’s Chief Financial and Operating Officer was Patrick Craig, who served the role until early 2023. 

The specific reason for Craig’s departure is not publicly available.

Goddard will take up the role of Chief Academic Services Officer from 3 March 2025 combining previous roles to enhance student experience and oversee the University’s academic support infrastructure including Student and Academic Services (SAS), Faculty Operations and Research and Innovation and Knowledge Exchange (RIKE). 

In response to the announcement, Goddard said: “I’m really pleased to be joining York and learning more about how we provide excellent support for both students and academics across our professional services.

“It draws on my experience in other universities and it’s great to be able to build on York’s amazing track record across research and teaching, as well as its commitment to its community.

“I am really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Goddard has previously held senior leadership positions at the Universities of Manchester, Salford and Liverpool with nearly three decades of experience in roles including Registrar, Chief Operating Director, Director of Strategic Planning and Director of Faculty Operations. 

The University Executive Board (UEB) acts as the University’s executive leadership team and meets twice a month.
