A University of York student drowned in the River Ouse in York, having jumped from a bridge, an inquest has revealed.
The body of 19-year-old Evan Geoffrey d’Andilly, a second year business management student, was recovered by police divers on 5th March after d’Andilly entered the water from the Ouse Bridge in the early morning.
The inquest in Northallerton found that the provisional cause of death was drowning.
D’andilly’s family said: “Evan was, and always will be our sunshine, our boy.
“He was bright, funny, loving, kind, generous, laid back and had a smile that lit up a room.
D’Andilly, from Scunthorpe, North Yorkshire, was days away from turning 20 on 9th March.
D’Andilly’s family spoke to the York Press last month and said their son was “a strong swimmer” and believed he had “fought bravely to stay above the water” for 20 minutes before his body was recovered from the river.
Gill Kane, Assistant Coroner, told Northallerton Coroner’s Court that d’Andilly’s father identified his body.
Kane adjourned the inquest to a later date.
A University of York spokesperson said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Evan and our thoughts are with his family and friends.
“This is also very upsetting news for our community and we are providing support to staff and students affected by Evan’s tragic death.”
