York Remains in the Top 150 Universities Worldwide

Alice Lilley reports on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 and what it means for the University of York.

The University of York has retained its position as one of the top 150 universities in the world, ranking 146th in the THE World University Rankings 2025.

The University has moved up by one place, having ranked 147th in 2024. 

Oxford University won the top spot in the rankings for the 9th consecutive year, with the University of Cambridge ranking 5th and the second highest UK university in the rankings.

The University of York has improved its reputation as an academic institution despite financial cuts. 

THE measures university performance through five key categories: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry and International Outlook. 

York scored highest in Research Quality scoring 90.6 and International Outlook scoring 92.9. Both these scores have improved since 2016. 

York scored considerably lower in Teaching at 42.4 and Research Environment at 44.2. York has slightly improved in Teaching since 2016 but has declined in Research Environment. 

York scored 66.8 in Industry, maintaining its substantial improvement from 2024. 

The University of York’s overall mark was 62.1, improving steadily from 55.4 in 2016. 

THE is well-regarded for its comprehensive university ranking system. 

THE website states that: “The THE World University Rankings provide the definitive list of the world’s best universities, with an emphasis on the research mission. 

“It is the only global university league table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.”
