The University of York’s branch of Hedgehogs on Campus have been awarded gold accreditation from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPI) for their continued dedication and hard work.
Gold accreditation is the highest commendation a Hedgehogs on Campus group can be awarded for making their campus safer and more hospitable for hedgehogs and other small wildlife.
York joins just 12 other gold accredited (BHPI) universities, with staff and student volunteer members of York’s Hedgehogs on Campus having spent three years building habitats, removing litter, and leaving food out for both hedgehogs and other campus wildlife.
A spokesperson from British Hedgehog Preservation Society said: “The University of York is one of 13 universities across the UK to achieve #HFCGold in 2022. The university has shown huge dedication and passion for helping hedgehogs and other wildlife through the Hedgehog Friendly Campus.
“We want to take this moment to thank all of the volunteers at the university who have taken part over the last three years. With hedgehogs now vulnerable to extinction in Britain, your help is more important than ever.”
These sentiments were echoed by a YUSU spokesperson who said: “YUSU is incredibly proud of the group’s hard work and look forward to celebrating their success and the achievements of other volunteering projects during the national Student Volunteering Week from the 7-13 February 2022.”
