York Chinese students danced through York city centre alongside dragons forming part of Chinese New Year celebrations across the city.
Students from the York Chinese Students Association performed in the Chinese New Year parade which involved dragons moving through the city on Saturday 8 February.
The parade passed the Minister, Parliament Street, St Helen’s Square and the Grand Hotel.
The students were joined by Chinese dancers, musicians and three dragons throughout the parade and large crowds formed to watch.
A spokesperson for the University Chinese Student Association said: ”The parade has a great atmosphere, where all the audiences were friendly and respectful.
“We gave our best in the parade and dance performance.”
York’s Chinese community helped form the parade which began at the Minister and ended in front of the York Mansion House.
Chinese New Year fell on Wednesday January 29 this year, marking the second new moon after the winter solstice on December 21. This year is the year of the snake.
A Chinese New Year Gala at the University on Saturday March 8 will mark the final celebration of Chinese New Year.
The gala is organised by the Chinese Students Association and involves dancing, music and performances by the local Chinese community.
Chair of the York Chinese Society Will Zhuang Said: “I think it’s really important to get the community together.
“In York the community is still relatively small, but it’s one of the largest minority communities in the city.”
