The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith has launched a £10 million fund to boost high streets in the region’s town centres.
The £10 million Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund aims to “breathe life back into high streets in York and North Yorkshire.”
The main goal of the fund is to attract visitors to town centres and boost the region’s high streets.
Skaith said: “I went to University in York and I can see how this fund will improve student life in an already amazing city!
“By bringing new life to high streets across York and North Yorkshire, the student experience in our region will continue to improve.”
The Vibrant and Sustainable High Street Fund is the first of four schemes to begin as part of the £27 million Mayoral Challenge Fund. Other programmes will aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support business sectors and improve adult vocational skills.
Skaith continued: “I want to make high streets the heart of local communities in York and North Yorkshire.”
The Fund is being introduced in phases with phase one involving grant applications ranging from £5,000 to £40,000 available for local groups to run projects that support the fund’s goals.
Phase two will introduce larger grants to support bigger long-term projects.
The Mayoral Challenge Fund is part of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority’s devolution agreement with the Government.
