Since 2015, the University of York has spent £37,716 cleaning its lakes, as shown by data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act
According to the University, lake cleaning is not outsourced, but instead is undertaken internally. The figures revealed are an approximate spend.
In 2019/20, the University splashed out and spent a whopping £8,946 to keep its lakes clean, the most money spent since at least 2015
This data dispels the rumours that the University of York refuses to clean the lake, due to fines from DEFRA being lower than the cost to clean the lake.
One resident of York seemed particularly happy about this news. Longboi, Campus West’s most famous waterfowl, cheerfully told Vision how happy he was to know that the University is taking care of its lakes:
