FirstBus recently announced that some of their student ticket prices will be increasing from the new year.

Sir Keir Starmer’s October budget introduced a £3 flat fare cap in England, which is an increase on the current £2 limit.

The new £3 cap is expected to run until the end of 2025.

How does this affect students?

FirstBus customers will now only be charged based on how far they’ve travelled using Tap On Tap Off (TOTO). This means single journeys will cost £1.50, £2.00, £2.60 or £3.00, depending on the distance.

If you’d rather buy a daily/weekly/monthly pass, the prices of these are going up as summarised below. Tickets can be purchased using the FirstBus mobile app.

TicketCurrent priceNew price/change
FirstDay Student£4.30£4.50
FirstWeek Student£17.00£18.00
FirstMonth Student£65.00£70.00

The University of York Single trip (10 trip and 20 trip tickets) and Kings Manor 10 trip tickets will not change in price.

Free and reduced price bus tickets for people between the ages of 16-18 in York will still continue until 30th March 2025, after an extension to the subsidy was agreed as part of the city’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

This plan was due to finish on 31st December 2024, but will continue following growing feedback on its importance.
