Leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer visited the University of York this morning. He was accompanied by Wes Streeting, the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in the UK.
They visited the Department of Health and Science to speak with trainee paramedics. Specifically, they learnt about “ECG recording and interpretation” in the Clinical Simulation Ward. Starmer and Streeting also watched a CPR demonstration from the students.
Speaking to broadcast journalists in attendance, The Leader of the Opposition additionally addressed the investigation into Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Sunak is being investigated by Parliament’s standards watchdog over a possible failure to declare an interest. It is understood that it is in relation to a childcare firm that his wife has shares in.
In today’s visit, Starmer spoke to Sky News about the issue:
“The Prime Minister promised integrity and accountability when he came into office. So I think he needs to clear this up.”
Starmer goes on to encourage the Prime Minister to “publish at least his entry on this issue today…don’t hide behind the process just come clean.”
Starmer was using the visit to talk about the shortage of doctors and praise universities for their training of them.
On Twitter, there were some complaints about the message this image gave. Richard Jenkins (@Richard1Jenkins) said “Not a mask in sight, in a healthcare setting. Just as if any airborne illnesses (such as Covid, remember that?) don’t exist. This is terrible messaging.”
The visit was coordinated by the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York and was likely a part of Labour’s campaigning ahead of local elections on the 4th of May.
