BREAKING NEWS: Long Boi Statue Damaged

The University has announced that the Long Boi statue has been damaged.

The Long Boi statue has been damaged, in a statement released by the University of York. 

The statue honouring the University of York’s famous mallard duck has been cordoned off and removed due to damage to the duck statue’s left leg. 

The statue is located by the lake at Derwent College on the University’s Campus West. 

The statement which was posted on Instagram on Friday 15th November said: “We are aware of some damage to our beloved Long Boi.

“His welfare, and the safety of those visiting him is paramount, so making him secure is our priority. 

We’ve taken steps to cordon him off for now as we assess the damage, and we’ll be doing all we can to fix him up as soon as possible.”

The statue which has been enclosed for safety reasons has a sign warning that 24 hour CCTV is in operation at all times. 

No details have been released regarding the cause of the damage to the statue. 

One student from the University said: “I saw it today, it seemed like someone tried to break it off so there’s damage on the leg.” 

The statue of the campus famous mallard duck was unveiled on 26 September 2024 by Radio 1’s Greg James at a memorial ceremony at the University of York. 

The statue was crafted by wildlife sculptor Neil Mason, following a fundraising campaign that raised over £5,000 for the sculpture.
