Manifesto Points:
- Avoid Monday deadlines and exams, increasing tutor availability before due dates, including weekends.

- Advocate for more elective course options and greater transparency in course selection.
Hi, I’m Yuling, and I’m running for Academic Officer!
I am a Master’s student at York, and I am committed to fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive academically and professionally. I aim to propose student-centered solutions to address the everyday challenges we face.
My key priorities are:
1. Flexible and Effective Learning Support
During the week, our schedules are often filled with lectures, leaving little time
for homework. Outside of class hours, when we need help with assignments, it can be challenging to find professors or TAs available for assistance.
Additionally, general math, statistics, or subject-specific tutors often lack detailed knowledge of individual courses, making their support too broad. To address this, I will:
Establish a course-specific peer tutor system, where students who have achieved high marks in a course can tutor those currently enrolled. This ensures that help is relevant and tailored to specific course content.
Provide paid peer tutoring opportunities, allowing high-achieving students to gain work experience for their resumes while easing their financial burden.
Offer more flexible tutor hours, as peer tutors are students themselves and can provide support in the evenings and on weekends when official university resources are unavailable.
2. Build Careers with Streamlined Administrative Support Securing job opportunities and advancing in further education should not be hindered by unnecessary administrative barriers. To support students in their career development, I will:
Provide free e-transcripts, so students can easily provide academic proof when applying for jobs or postgraduate programs without financial burdens.
Offer provisional graduation certificates, enabling students to secure employment or further education opportunities while waiting for their official degree certificate.
Establish a departmental newsletter or online noticeboard, regularly updating students with relevant job and internship opportunities, providing direct application links, and saving students time spent searching for opportunities.
3. Transparent and Fair Course Selection
The current course selection process lacks transparency. Students receive
enrollment results without knowing key details such as course demand, waiting list position, or the availability of dropped courses. This makes it difficult for students to make informed decisions each semester. To improve this, I will advocate for a more transparent course enrollment system, where students can view:
The total number of students requesting a course.
Whether a course is highly competitive.
Their position on the waiting list and the likelihood of getting in.
By electing me as your Academic Officer, you are choosing greater accessibility, transparency, and student empowerment. Let’s work together to create an academic environment that truly supports you from admission to graduation.
Vote Yuling for Academic Officer!
