Hockey
A triumphant team in many respects last term, particularly with their comprehensive 4-1 victory in the Northern BUCS Final over MMU Cheshire. A mid-table finish in the BUCS League to finish the campaign soon followed. However the clubs’ penchant for a strong nightlife soon overshadowed their on-field success as Vision uncovered rather astonishing initiation footage last term. If you’re partial to interesting drink ingredients, then this is the club for you!

Football
Reminiscent of the sport worldwide, football is one of the university’s most prominent clubs. With trials running every day of Freshers’ Week bar Saturday, this is the chance for your summer fitness maintenance to be truly tested. If you’re unable to get into one of the uni team, there’s still the opportunity to play weekly in college football, and then of course in the summer term there’s the mighty College Cup, played over six weeks between 1sts, 2nds and 3rds teams, and last year won by the all-conquering Alcuin.

Fencing
The Fencing Club are a society very much on the up following last season’s exploits. Last year’s record annual member enrolment was soon noticeable as the women secured promotion to the Northern Premier Division in the playoff final against Newcastle. In the past, the club was often deprived of funds from YorkSport. But times are changing and this club really is going places. Now they’re regarded as the university’s team of the year. Why not let your guard down, and get involved.
Badminton
They’re the university’s largest club with members surpassing the 250 mark. It means a lack of competition is never an issue, and players’ racquet abilities are constantly tested and improving. Last year an admirable campaign from the women’s 1sts gave them a second placed finish, whilst the men fought off university heavyweights such as Manchester to finish mid-table. Of course the badminton club strives to improve participation and performance levels, so don’t hesitate to sign up.

Tennis
Tennis is regarded as the university’s ‘most friendly’ sports club. Talent amongst the ranks is hardly short with 100 members and four teams occupying the BUCS Championship, with the 1sts team of 2009/2010 defying the odds to reach the nationwide BUCS Cup semi-final. A new season brings the potential to serve up a new batch of stars, so get in the swing of Freshers Fever with the tennis.

”We cater for all abilities, with free coaching available for beginners. With 3 teams competing in BUCS and a large training squad, there is plenty of opportunity to get involved.” – Tennis Club
Pool and Snooker
The re-emergence of the worldwide popularity of pool and snooker at the turn of the decade, following Ronnie O’Sullivan’s premature remarks the sport was ”dying”, has also coincided with an upswing in the university club’s fortunes. Pool and snooker were arguably our university’s most successful sports last term. The cue sports finished successive seasons with a century of BUCS points., whilst marquee figure and squad manager Michael Walsh captained the England universities snooker squad to a win in the home nations competition this summer. Likewise, Walsh helped his country succeed in the England home nations pool team. The future of snooker aims to avoid the game being blurred by frames of dire ball potting. The rate of success of the pool and snooker could well be part of this!

Rugby
There is little doubting York Uni’s rugby credentials. Last season the men’s 1sts stretched their unbeaten home record to a remarkable two years, only for this superb run to be ended on the turn of the year by a powerful Birmingham side in a closely fought match. In addition, both men’s and women’s teams played their way to highly impressive away victories on on Lancaster soil at last summer’s Roses. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty, being supported by the most passionate fans, and going knee deep against some of the Uni’s powerhouses, look no further!
