The Freshers Edition is finally here! 18 year olds all over Britain will be recieving results tomorrow, and eagerly logging onto the University of York’s best student newspaper to find out more about the city that will become their new home.. We’re getting in the spirit of things this Wishlist Wednesday, and I’ve picked out some ‘essentials’ any student needs in their Freshers wardrobe.
If you’re new to York – WELCOME! You’re in good hands.. If you’re a regular, it’s time to invest for the coming year…
The first thing you need to be prepared for is that, by the end of Fresher’s week, most of your favourite night-out outfits will be ruined. You’ll need a new look to debut once Freshers is over, and this Diesel anchor-print shirt is the best way to make a new impression; pair it with jeans and a big leather belt for your flat, or chinos for a night out with your new teammates.
This dress from Urban Outfitters is the perfect ‘I’m Worth It’ statement to any wandering eyes you’ve met in Freshers Week. The colour won’t stain with spillages, it’ll look great with statement or co-ordinating accessories, and the lace print and skater-skirt are effortlessly flattering. Spend your first weeks introducing it to York’s nightlife, and wear with big boots and a leather or fur jacket for winter day-time glam at the end of term.
I know they’ve been round for a couple of years, and I know people who wear theirs to Morrisons take it a bit far (I’ve done that) but I can’t stress how much of a useful investment one of these babies is. They’re unbelievably comfy – the perfect outfit for tackling freshers flu, when your essay’s due in tomorrow and you’re so stressed out you can’t dress yourself, and even to bed during January when you’re too poor for heating.
The models might both be ladies, but these styles from super-onesie-brand OnePiece and upcoming country lifestyle brand Rampant Sporting are both unisex – the OnePiece is available in several colours, styles & countries, and the Rampant number – with it’s quirky hood – is available in Grey & Navy Blue. If you don’t live near a John Lewis, and you’re not into shopping on the web then cute styles can be found in American Apparel, Topshop, Topman and Republic.
Finally, something work-related. The “Bag” Problem, term coined by yours truly, is the name for the devastating effect the struggle between practical – the embarrassing laptop rucksack your parents bought you – and fashionable – the bag you splurged on to impress your new housemates – will have on your University career. Don’t worry girls – you can have your cake and eat it too. Invest in a colour co-ordinated bag for your laptop and work accessories, and a small ‘essentials’ purse for showing off; the Lily bag by Mulberry works well for this, as it’s fairly spacious and can be worn cross-body or as a shoulder bag.
Alternatively, there is one bag to rule them all. The Longchamp ‘Le Pliage’ is a multi-coloured canvas cutie; spacious and prepared for all weather, rough treatment and caffeine spillages. The strong leather handles mean you can drag everything you could ever want with you – kitchen sink included, although that could affect your deposit…It comes in millions of colours (and customisable styles) that won’t break the bank and can also be folded up, which means you can pop it in your pocket if you’re heading to the shops – unfold, and voila! something to carry everything home in.
Boys – get a satchel. A cool one. Made of leather – nobody likes a cheapskate.
‘Til next time.
