More sports at York

Believe it or not there are still more sports clubs on offer at York, and here in this next instalment you can learn about a few more. I’ll admit some of them are not ones that would leap to mind, and you may think they’re weird, wacky and aren’t for you, but it doesn’t mean they’re not worth a try.

ARCHERY- So you fancy yourself as a bit of a Robin Hood, or reminisce what it was like to shoot a bow and arrow in the middle ages. Well archery at York may be a bit more high-tech than that, but it is still a great deal of fun. As a sport it doesn’t get a great deal of publicity, and university may be the first time you’ve had the opportunity to get involved with the sport. The club has its own archery range and looses its bowstrings throughout the years, sometimes indoors and at other times in the great outdoors. Relaxed and informal sessions are held every week, whilst the society enters competitions throughout the year. More information can be found on their website at York Archery.

CLAY PIGEON SHOOTING- Well what to say about this? You probably have never had a go at it, and some of you may never want to, but others might jump at the opportunity to revel in a completely new experience. You don’t actually shoot pigeons you’ll be glad, or disappointed, to know. Instead you fire a shotgun at flying clay targets, which are known as ‘clay pigeons’. This can be a very fulfilling activity helping you to improve hand-eye coordination, whilst attaining great enjoyment. All levels are welcome to attend the society which is based at a shooting club near Goole, a thirty minute drive away.

GOLF- Now a lot of you have probably had a go at golf at some time in your life. Some of you might be like me clubbing their way around in an unthinkable number over par, whilst others will fancy themselves as the next Rory Mcllroy or Tiger Woods. Regardless of your ability, University of York’s golf club may be the society for you. It welcomes all abilities, handing the opportunity for everyone to play. The society bases itself at nearby Fulford golf course, an excellent facility which is particularly useful due to its location. Competitions are held within the club, to add a competitive edge to the friendly and welcoming society.

KARTING- If it’s exhilaration you’re after or you’re just missing your car whilst you’re at university, then why not join the University of York Karting society? The society offers weekly events at both indoor and outdoor tracks throughout the North-East, allowing everyone to take part and enjoy themselves. The club also competes in the National Championships against other universities, one of their highlight of the year. If you want to know more then take a look at their website.

POOL AND SNOOKER- Both of these are a great deal of fun to play, and a fantastic way to unwind and relax with friends. At York you can take this to an all new level, by joining the thriving university pool and snooker society, which will allow you to compete with and enjoy the company of like minded individuals. Practice sessions are held on Wednesdays and Sundays at Cueball snooker on James Street. Anybody is welcome to attend, and can play either pool or snooker regardless of their ability. Make your way down to a session and find out more about this friendly and welcoming society.

POLO- To many polo is an amazing sport, combining the thrills of horse riding with the competitive edge of a team game. It is a fast and technical sport, which demands both skill and strength from the participants. At York anyone is welcome to join the polo society, which trains at the White Rose Polo Club. The society competes at the SUPA winter championships and summer national championships, as well as playing friendly matches throughout the year. Even if you’ve never ridden a horse before you can come along, and be guided and instructed as you develop an all new skill. You can visit YUPC for more details.
