Vision’s BAFTA Predictions: Television

bafta_awards_2135130b

The nominations for the British Television Academy Awards have just been announced and can be viewed here. Laura-Kate gives her view on the nominations and who she thinks will win…

Leading Actor

Jamie Dornan is nominated for his role in The Fall which launched as BBC Two’s highest rating drama since 2005. The panel are sure to recognise this and reward Dornan’s efforts in the form of a gold and shiny award.

Supporting Actor

ITV’s Broadchurch sees David Bradley receive a nomination in this category. With the final episode giving ITV the highest rating episode of the series by one million viewers, an award looks promising for Bradley.

Leading Actress

I’d like to see Maxine Peake take home this award. Peake is a fantastic actress so it goes without saying that she portrayed the struggle and suffering of her and her character’s family to an exceptional standard.

Supporting Actress

This award could go to either Sarah Lancashire or Nicola Walker, both nominated for their roles in BBC One’s Last Tango in Halifax. Lancashire was nominated last year in this same category but she lost out. Since there are now two nominees from this drama there is every chance that either Walker or Lancashire could scoop the award.

Entertainment Performance

Graham Norton and Sarah Millican are once again being nominated for the same category as last year, so there’s every chance that the voters can recognise the nation’s adoration for these two and give them a chance for the winning spot. Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway has just finished its eleventh series bursting back onto our TV screens with the second series since the show’s four year break. It would certainly be foolish for the panel not to vote for this pair, they have brought us Brits Saturday night entertainment for the past 12 years.

Female performance in a comedy programme

Frances De La Tour’s comedy skills are second to none in ITV’s Vicious; she plays her role perfectly so it would be a shame for her to miss out on this award. Likewise Katherine Parkinson is perfect in The IT Crowd playing a ditzy dim-witted IT manager with no IT skills, brilliant! I’m rooting for either of these two to win the top spot, they more than deserve it.

Male Performance in a comedy programme

James Corden’s popularity with the nation is high therefore I think that he will bag this award, however I would root for the perfect comedy coupling of Chris O’Dowd and Richard Ayoade for their roles in The IT Crowd. Although I’d love to see either of them win this award, I’d be surprised if they did, much to my own personal dismay!

Soap & Continuing Drama

Old favourites Eastenders and Coronation Street are once again nominated this year alongside new nominees Casualty and Holby City. As Eastenders’s production team was able to win this title last year, maybe it’s time to make way for the best street in the North? The outcome remains to be seen…

International

Of course Breaking Bad is nominated! This series has been literally the talk of the whole nation, even before it made its way across the pond from its USA homeland to the unassuming shores of Britain. It would be a real shocker if Breaking Bad didn’t bring this award back home.

Factual Series

The winner of this category has got to be Educating Yorkshire; it captivated the nation for nine weeks, every week more exciting and enthralling as the next.

Specialist Factual

David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive has got to bag the top spot here; Attenborough is a national treasure who has provided us with stunning nature programmes since the 1970s and is still going strong!

Features

My money is on Grand Designs or The Great British Bake Off, the former has been on TV screens ever since I can remember and for those food lovers, especially cake (mmm…cake) the latter has got to be a must see, let’s hope the ratings will reflect this and influence the panel’s voting.

Reality & Constructed Factual

Googlebox. It has to be the winner. Who doesn’t want to see other people watching TV while you’re watching them on TV? TV inception, much?

Sport & Live Event

Anyone for Tennis? BBC’s Wimbledon Men’s Final should be the winner here.

Entertainment Programme

Once again Saturday Night Takeaway is nominated for this category, however since Dynamo: Magician Impossible is nominated again this year, maybe the voters will give this a chance.

Comedy and comedy entertainment programme

Would I Lie To You? my personal favourite, but if it will win, I have a gut feeling that it won’t. A likely winning candidate would probably The Graham Norton Show.

Situation comedy

If The IT Crowd don’t take home any of the awards previously nominated for this year, I’d like to see them take home this one. If a show can hook a person for a whole week (yes I watched all the episodes of The IT Crowd in a week) that’s got to be a winning trait!

Radio Times Audience Award

This is the one we, the great British public get to vote for and with such a fantastic array of nominees, we’d probably all want them to win. Sadly there can only be one winner. Personally, I’d hope that Educating Yorkshire will win this.
