Most York students graduating this summer are pessimistic about their career prospects, a Vision survey has revealed.
The effects of the Credit Crunch is being felt by students with 80% of those surveyed opting out of employment altogether, choosing further education or a gap year instead. Only 12% have so far been able to get any employment confirmed.
One third-year explained: “After one year, the economy may be faring better,” while another claimed “I know only one person leaving with a confirmed offer of employment.”
With the debts of university to think of and few jobs available, a staggering 84% told Vision they
had financial worries about the coming year.
“More students than ever are moving back home,” said one student. “I’m one of them. It’s an illogical step after the freedoms of university, but what can you do when you only have debt to your name?”
Students have a tough year to face as the country’s economy remains in crisis. “There are part-time jobs available,” one graduating student commented. “People need to stop being so fussy.”
