Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor made CBE

University of York Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor has been made a CBE in the 2013 New Year’s Honours list.

Cantor, who took over as Vice-Chancellor back in 2002, receives the honour for his services to Higher Education, ahead of him stepping down from his position at the end of the 2012/13 academic year. “I am enormously proud to receive this honour as we enter our 50th year. I do so on behalf the staff, students and friends and supporters of the University who have helped to make York such a success story in higher education,” he said.

Back in 2010 Vision revealed how Cantor had claimed nearly £135,000 in expenses over the course of three years, including £50,758 in 2008/09 alone – a figure dwarfing the expenses claimed by his counterparts at other top universities and even the Director General of the BBC.

Among the claims were a chauffeured service to Heslington East from Heslington West, costing £141, and a return trip to King’s Manor costing £287.50.

Two other University staff members were also recognised in the Honours list, with Professor Susan Mendus – Morrell Professor Emerita of Political Philosophy, also being made a CBE for her services to political science, and Professor Sarah Madeleine Thompson, the head of the Physics Department, is made an MBE for her services to Higher Education.
