York continued their Varsity thrashing of Hull with a deserved victory in the Men’s 1sts Squash.
The whole event was a smashing success and York’s Sam Westmooreland might well have been a part-time waiter; his serving was magnificent and proved to be the platform for his hard-fought win against Craig Harding.
After taking the first game, and causing his opponent to throw his racket away in frustration, Westmooreland continued to dominate and secured an 11-9 win in the second. Despite being pegged back to 2-2 he kept his cool by standing near the fans. And the exhausted Westmooreland went on to claim the decisive fifth game 11-9, saying he “always had to give one hundred per cent”.
York were quickly pegged back, however, as Nanz Dixit lost 2-3 in games to Nathan Quilliam. It was a tough match for both players who just seemed to cancel each other out with aggressive shots flying in all corners of the court. But Quilliam did superbly well to hold off Dixit’s threat, and after the match had finished it was clear to see he had no sympathy for his competitor. After all, in Squash, Love means nothing at all.
And that result meant all eyes were on York’s Jonathan Brolls when he faced Harvey Barrett in the final match of the contest. But it wasn’t the ‘epic’ that we all were predicting, as Brolls stormed to a 3-0 win to gift York the overall victory. At 2-0, Barrett looked as though he may have that necessary will power to get back into the match, but Brolls did very well to calm the nerves and see the third game out.
It was a pleasing performance and the result reflected Hull’s resistance well, but in the end York’s strength proved too much for the men in yellow.
