Down at the squash courts, Riz Azhar, Laurie Points and Louis Sandys stepped up to face their Hull opponents. Two of them needed to win their matches in order to claim the points. Each match would be the best of five games and it is was a race to eleven points, reaching this by two clear points, to win each game.

Captain Riz Azhar defeated his opponent 11-6, 11-5 and 13-11 in what was a very quick match. Azhar dominated the match from the start, playing some very cleverly placed shots which proved impossible to return. Despite his Hull opposition fighting back and playing better and stronger in the third game, Azhar triumphed, getting the team off to a fantastic start.

Up next was Laurie Points who disposed of his opponent in a similar fashion to Azhar, beating him 11-4, 11-4 and 13-11. He also faced a late surge in the last game but rose to his opponents challenge. He benefited from some very powerful shots that echoed around the court. With Points’ victory came the teams overall triumph. Adding another two points to York’s overall tally.

The most exciting (and closely fought) match came last. Louis Sandys was taken to the full five matches by his Hull opponent Cockshutt. Despite losing the first game 11-5, Sandys rallied back to take the next two 11-6 and 11-9. He displayed some beautiful play in these games, including one shot that hit the bottom of the area perfectly, dropping down perfectly, impossible to return. Cockshutt took the fourth match 11-3. This meant, with two games apiece, it all came down to the last match. Sandys dominated on court to claim it 11-5.

With three matches to Hull’s naught it was a perfect score to York. Captain Azhar complimented his team saying they had ‘all been working hard this year and it has paid off’. He was jubilant with the score stating that it ‘can’t get better than that’.
