Unhappy hoops

The men’s first basketball team continued their dismal season, narrowly losing their fifth game out of five in the tent against Hull.

The first quarter was marked by indiscipline and fouling from both sides. Hull were deadlier from free throws, not missing one, yet York were far more threatening from open play, driven by forward Andreas Boedt who was scoring quality baskets and drawing fouls.

The score was incredibly even and the end of the first quarter at 23-22 to York, yet it could have been 23-20 were it not for a sloppy loss of possession by Justas Mikaliunas leading to a last second score for Hull.

It was an even contest in the second quarter too, with Hull edging it until a tactical timeout three minutes from half time saw a renewed York impetus, reversing the scoreline with an eight point swing, epitomized by a superb reverse layup by Dan Baark. The half time score was 43-39 to York.

However, the game was effectively lost in the third quarter, the number of turnovers increasing by the minute. York shots weren’t hitting the target and heads were starting to drop, the home side only adding four points to the overall scoreline at the end of the quarter, which read 47-66.

In the final quarter of the match, York regained some fight and scored some points, yet it was not enough to claw back the deficit. The final score was 69-76, a close game in which York showed a lot of fight. Club president George Rowland was disappointed, saying “every loss is frustrating, particularly when we only played badly in one quarter. Hopefully we’ll do better next term”.
