After watching the latest fix of teenage-vamp romance, credit must go to the franchise’s producers for still attracting millions of viewers to watch another dreary adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s much loved books. While teenage girls mourn the loss of good looking sparkly vampires and semi-naked werewolves on the big screen, the rest of us should breathe a sigh of relief that it’s all over.
Picking up where Part 1 left off the first half of the film is both boring and predictable. With the birth of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward’s (Robert Pattinson) horrifically CGI enhanced daughter Renesmee, and the conversion of Bella into a vampire; there is plenty of opportunity for a class in awkward breathing from Kristen Stewart, while the Cullens stand around in their modern abode exchanging pleasantries and posing for the camera. Suddenly there is trouble in paradise when the Volturi (the vampire baddies who wear scary hoods) make false allegations into the nature of the child’s birth. With a realisation that an action scene is badly required, the film picks up a little with vampire tribes from all over the world convening for a showdown against the Volturi. This penultimate scene is welcome providing the audience with some decent special effects and an unexpected twist. “And then we continued blissfully into this small but perfect piece of our forever. ” Ending the film with a quote from the book the audience are meant to feel touched, but instead it just reminds them what a truly poor adaptation the film is.
