Queen of Clubs – Tokyo

Formerly known as Tru, Tokyo came into existence a year ago. Although Tokyo boasts new management and a new look, unsurprisingly for York, it’s pretty much the same as it ever was.   Still, it is a venue that can actually be classed under the term ‘club’ and as such probably provides one of the classiest nights of the week. Although I use the term ‘classy’ very very loosely. Very loosely.

With 3 rooms, or 3 ROOMS OF AWESOME MIND-MELTING BANGING TUNES as the facebook group probably claims, you get a healthy blend of music genres. Downstairs serves up standard chart and dance fair, along with an indie room, and the upstairs area belts out RnB classics all night.

Location?
The road parallel to Ziggys. If you’re predrinking along Mickelgate then a lot of the bars have particularly handy cut-through that bring you out right by Tokyo.

Famous for?
DJ “Grotty” Gotti. Apparently a fan of encouraging students to get up on stage and act out various sex positions. And S Club 3 played there last year. Definitely a claim to fame if ever there was one.

Bargain Booze?
Standard fare, much like the club. Shots are £1 and you can get a K2, Carlsberg or a vodka and mixer for £1.50.

Most likely to encounter?
Eager freshers keen to milk first year for all it’s worth.

Least likely to encounter?
Stressed out third years who have become way more selective about which nights they hit the Yorkshire cobbles.

Sounds like?
Any moderately decent club you’ve ever been to. The upstairs area is particularly fond of Pitbull.

When to go?
Thursday night is the official York student night so your student card will get you discounted entry for £3.50 or, if you’re super organized and committed, you can pick up a Q Jump from The Courtyard for only £2.50.
