As a Fresher, you will be given a wristband and promised some of the most frivolous and exciting fun of your life. Chances are it wont be fun, you will be dragged to some of the worst clubs in the world, and no amount of prawn crackers will be able to salvage it. However there are some great nights in York that have popped up over the last couple of years, although their predominant premise is house music (which is devoid of any kind of words you can sing along to) they are great fun and I urge to check this out and avoid any YUSU affliated night.
Remedy: Katie Barrett and Penny Longstaffe started music Remedy. The first of these house music nights to be in Ziggys (or Mansion depending on your generation). Located in the basement of the ex-home of sports societies, this venue is known for its labyrinthine maze of rooms and stripped back feel, although with a renovation underway this summer that could all change. The music is great, the place usually packed out, headlined by the likes of Golden Boy and Wayward, with more excellent lines up promised for next year. All profits go to charity, making this hedonistic fun far more excusable.
Milli Vanilli: This was organised by Tim Perera, and has been a great success throughout the last year. Milli Vanilli showcases some of the best of York’s home DJ’s such as Harry J and Kit Munro. With music ranging through the ages, with techno, house and everything in between, this night is never one to miss. Having spent the last two years in Fibbers, this club is allegedly joining the ranks of Music Remedy and hitting the basement of Ziggys. We will find out next year how this will work out!
Bangers & Mash: Bangers and Mash is a new development which began last academic year. Started by five young entrepreneurial types (Luke Wilson, Thomas Waghorn, Jonjo Lowe, Nam Shatil and Damien Allinson) this night breached the boundaries of Fibbers and sold out for the first time in years on their debut night. What made this night special at one point was having the occasional extra night in Tokyo, a bigger and more exciting club, which was wonderful when it was sold out! The music ranges from house, garage and even electro. The night has brought to York, ‘Waze and Odyssey’ and other exciting disk jockeys
Vous êtes tous des Animaux. Animaux is a night where a unique blend of underground electronic music and visuals come together to give you a night to remember. They successfully launched way back in April, summer term, bringing an artist called Asa (which they strongly recommend you check out) as well as showing visuals which have never been done before in York. They then continued to expand with a night in June which was yet another success – not only counting the technical side of things but as well as attracting people who have only experienced cheese nights. They have a lot planned this year – starting as early as October. Follow them on facebook to hear more!
Just like to point out that not only have you managed to spell DAMIAN ALLINSON’s name wrong (that’s what you get from pulling straight from facebook) you’ve also forgotten another organiser … Nam Shatil?
Breakz events next year are gonna dwarf all of these, you have been warned….
INCORRECT. A lot of house music is in fact very heavily dependent on vocals with a huge variety of vocal based tracks being found across all sub genres of this diverse musical genre.
This article’s a great start, but barely scratches the surface of what York’s got to offer these days – house, breaks, techno, funk & soul, dub, reggae, old-skool rave/hardcore – it’s all there if you look!
A few nights you should check out – search for ’em on on facebook:
Freakin’, Eclectronica, Spangled, Irie Vibes, Sub:Terranea, Funk Yo Couch, Give It Some!, Because We Can, Region2…
Just like to point out these nights out are all cack
That’s your opinion.
I would rather be at bangers and mash or insomnia/drop than be at that ridiculous ‘rich and famous’ night at revs or wherever else. It’s peoples’ preferences.
As a person who’s coming from london, I’m interested in the DNB scene if there even is any
