Tara Annison has been elected the new Goodricke JCRC chair for 2014.
The hotly contested election saw Annison beat off strong competition from opponents Mitchell Salter and Conor Bennett. Annison came through on 163 votes, whilst Salter gained 140 votes and Bennett was eliminated in the first round with 99.
Despite three strong candidates, turnout for the chair position was only 351.
Annison, keen to congratulate her campaign team for their efforts during the campaign process, noted that the election was always going to be tense and that she couldn’t have been more pleased.
The rather low turnout was something of a worry for the candidates, demanding a high bar for delivery throughout the rest of the year. Despite the high quality of all three candidates and the scale of campaigns, the electorate seemed unresponsive. Annison’s emphasis on student friendly policies was a common theme across all campaigns.
Services Vice-Chair-elect Saul Rennison, has emphasised his desire to provide the college with better events and more publicity for the college. Rennison also called for more bar crawls abroad in order to reach out to international students more, a policy he is also keen to pursue.
Other notable results include Scott Dawson winning the race for Vice-Welfare Rep and the election of Derwent’s first ever elected Disability Rep, Callum Dziedzic with only 3 RON votes.

Callum is NOT Goodricke’s first disability Rep. Bill Timpany held the role before him. However, Callum IS Goodricke’s first ELECTED disability rep, and for that he must be congratulated
The disability officer has been part of the committee going back years. Several people have been elected to the position in elections amd by-elections in the past.
“… and the election of Derwent’s first ever elected Disability Rep, Callum Dziedzic with only 3 RON votes.”
Goodricke isn’t Derwent by the way….
Finally the majority of the positions are known as officers, with the exception of the “big 5” and the accommodation reps.
Student Journalism at its finest
There are no elected Sponsorship “Reps” (see above comment) in Goodricke, those Sponsorship Officers are for Derwent.

Atleast the last time I went to school, 163 + 140 + 99 = 402. It’s actually very worrying that a university student cant do basic math or even use a calculator……
It’s the transferable vote system. Bennett gets eliminated in the first round and the 99 people who voted him as their first choice have their second choices counted instead, adding to the totals of Annison and Salter for the next round (48 extra between them), with any RON or blank second choice votes not being counted (51). Pretty simple, really.
The reason why the figures are off is because the voting system is STV and the votes would have been redistributed
Kind of annoyed that I had to find out about the results of my own college’s election via this website. Having put up with a barrage of ‘vote for me!’ posts of the often used Goodricke Facebook group there wasn’t a whiff of news about the actual results, nor could I find them on the Goodricke website.
Very few of the policies were aimed at students no longer living in halls, despite promises of this in my first year, yet I voted anyway and was left feeling even less like a part of the college than before.
Sort it out Goodricke.
Good to see absolutely nothing has changed since I left.
Bend it like Bennett though
