Supplementary Positions

YUM Chair

Jake Farrell

Second year English Literature student from Derwent, Farrell is the Sports Editor for Nouse, presents York Sport on YSTV, and holds a prime-time slot on URY.

He is committed to making himself available to all members of media societies, to help with problems, and to facilitate solutions.

Farrell believes in the primary function of societies being to serve their members, and as such is dedicated to making sure any student can become part of York University Media. He is also keen to encourage healthy, rather than confrontational competition between media societies.

Council Chair

Pav Dhande

SECOND year Philosophy student Dhande has three core reasons to stand for Council Chair; to widen student participation in the Union, to hold YUSU accountable, and to do his part to see in recent changes.

He would encourage JCRCs to promote UGMs within their college, and possibly extend this to course representatives. Dhande wants to get more involved in day-to-day running, and attend all JCRC meetings to ensure links are kept active between YUSU and committees.

He believes he could be the strong personality YUSU will need to adjust to its current changes.

Luke Sandford

AS YUSU Campaign Officer, Sandford is familiar with the function and structure of Union Council, and believes he is well placed to jump straight into the role of Council Chair.

If elected, he intends to improve the accessibility of Council to ordinary members, and to publish a brief summary of Council business for quick reference alongside full minutes.

He believes the Council Chair role will change considerably in light of the democratic review, and is keen to see more of a focus on promoting democratic engagement.

Senate Representative

Tørris Rasmussen

RASMUSSEN is running for Senate Representative because he believes he can “help make this university, student life, and your degree worth even more.

With a looming fee increase, Rasmussen believes it is important to maximise the value for money with better teaching and better facilities. He intends to push for more private research funding for the areas in which the university excels.

If elected he will petition the university to change to cheaper, and greener forms of energy, and to save money through solutions such as double glazing.

Tom Rigby

AFTER speaking to a number of students, Rigby says he has “realised that there is a growing consensus that, not only are cutbacks being made that will significantly affect our education, that students feel increasingly uninformed and detached from departmental and university level decisions.”

If elected, Rigby hopes to tackle these problems directly, and improve communications to avoid misinterpreted facts filtering down to students and creating anxiety.

He intends to liase with subject reps across the board to uncover and resolve issues occurring on an inter-departmental level, particularly assessment feedback quality.

NUS Delegate

Ben Humphrys

Economics and Philosophy graduate Humphrys has spent the past two years in Sabbatical positions, first as Welfare Officer and currently as Academic Affairs. He’s running for NUS delegate hoping to make York a more vocal voice at the NUS conference.

He also aims to fight changes to the “regulatory framework that may undermine what it is to be a student at York.” He has extensive experience on a university management level and an interest in issues that affect York, such as the recent attempts to impose limits on student housing.

Raoul Lundberg

LUNDBERG is a third year Politics student, who has helped to organise campaigns such as York Students Against Cuts, Unite Against Fascism and Stop the War Coalition.

If elected, he hopes to lobby the NUS to show their support for, and engage more with, local campaigns, and also hopes to tackle the perceived lack of democracy within the NUS.

He opposes the NUS’ ‘closed door’ negotiations with the government. Controversially, he claims to want to “make them a more activist, militant body again.”

Alexandra Peck

PECK is a 3rd year Politics and Philosophy student. Over the past two years, she has been heavily involved in student campaigns, such Disarm.

Her policies include lobbying the NUS to get more help for students to deal with the ‘hidden costs’ of university and making environmental sustainability a bigger part of the NUS agenda. She believes the NUS should give more backing to small scale anti-fee rise protests, and “defend every student action which is done [against tuition fee rise].”

Luke Sandford

IF elected, Sandford would support our university’s policies at NUS level, including opposition to fee rises and budget cuts, and ethical policies on clothes and waste.

He is particularly interested in the issue of live music at student events, and the ways in which NUS can support YUSU in ensuring acts show up.

Sandford wants to see the NUS help to minimise the impact of fee increases on the poorest students by supporting outread programmes and bursaries.

Sophie Shaw

HAVING held the position of Chair of York Socialists, and been involved with York Students Against Cuts, and the Demolition campaign, Shaw has ample political experience for the role of NUS Delegate.

Politics student Shaw wants the NUS to be more accountable and democratic in their election process, and include full disclosure on candidates’ policy aims. She believes it is important to co-ordinate grassroot movements into their national anti-fee rise policy.

Shaw believes in “listening to the opinions of others” as well as “having strong beliefs of your own.”
