An event to see former Downing Street Press Secretary Alastair Campbell has sold out after one day of tickets going on sale.
Students flocked to Facebook earlier today and yesterday to snap up tickets in a bid to see the Labour figure at the University’s Exhibition Centre this Friday.
Put on by the York Union, the free event, which is also open to the public, invites Mr. Campbell to speak with an audience question and answer session to follow.
Students will also be allowed to meet him and get a signed copy of his book.
A spokesperson for the York Union said via Facebook that more tickets will become available this week.
As well as serving as Press Secretary under Tony Blair, Alastair Campbell also took office as Labour’s official spokesman and he served as the party’s director of communications and strategy.
Mr. Campbell is also known for coining the term ‘New Labour’ – a reference to the rule under Blair and Gordon Brown.
Harry Scoffin, from the York Union, told Vision: “We would like to thank those who have managed to secure tickets but also the Communications Office who helped promote it. This enthusiasm and exposure that the York Union is beginning to gain is very positive.”
Even though the event is free, the York Union has suggested a student donation of £1.50 and a public donation of £3.
“It is worth noting that some of our speakers only agree to come up just a week before so it’s vitally important that people know about our events through our website, mailing list and social media presence so not to miss out,” Mr. Scoffin added.
