A car accident on campus yesterday has left a student in hospital.
The collision occurred when a woman was hit by a Nissan Cabstar van at around 1240 near the bus stops outside the library.
Police officers at the scene confirmed that the student was female, and approximately 20 years of age.
A second eyewitness described how the student “appeared to be concussed”, though it is currently unclear as to whether or not this has been medically confirmed. She said: “The girl was able to move but didn’t stand up, they put her on a stretcher and drove off with her in the back of the ambulance.”
YUSU President Tim Ngwena issued a statement to say that the union’s “thoughts are with her family, and we wish her a swift recovery. YUSU will be doing all it can to help.”
This news comes after a York Extra bulletin was published by the Health, Safety and Welfare Department last Friday, warning students to take care crossing the road. It said: “There have been a few near miss and incidents involving pedestrian and vehicle collisions on the public highway surrounding the University recently. Unfortunately these occurrences tend to happen more frequently following the arrival of new students from overseas.”
“In response to these recent incidents the University of York and North Yorkshire Police would like to highlight the dangers of crossing the highway without due caution. Always listen out and check in both directions as you cross. Remember that in Britain cars drive on the left, and as a rule will approach from the right. Please take extra care when crossing the road during the hours of darkness.”
Vision contacted the University Press Office soon after the accident, though at the time of writing they had yet to comment.
