York turned out yet another victory against a poor St. John’s team and inch ever closer to the Varsity title. This time it was the women’s volleyball team who’s assured straight set win left St. John’s players battered and bruised. A final score line of 25-7, 25-3 and 25-5 did justice to York’s dominance over a patently weaker team.
The match began much closer than the score suggests as both York and St. John’s produced a spirited display though the latter team’s early form quickly disintegrated as they allowed York to score fifteen points without reply. Annelies Vredveldt was instrumental, providing a strong and confident performance.
As the second set began St. John were left in total confusion and could only manage to scrape three points from a few rare York mistakes. Frustrations in the St. John camp became evident as they threw themselves across the floor, unable to return even the simplest of serves.
By the third set York’s victory was all but certain and with the secure service of Maiko Uesaki and the savage spikes of Alexa Mitterhuber our most cosmopolitan of teams locked down the win.
After the match captain Lucy Porter described the game as ‘a great chance to try new positions before Wednesday.’ She went on to say that its hard to take the match seriously as ‘many of the St. John’s girl know the rules properly. Its never really a hard game against them but its always fun to play.’
