Do you like a bit of rock ‘n’ roll and a large amount of cheap drinks? Then Stone Roses, affectionately referred to as ‘Stones’ is the one for you.
Populated by tattooed washed-up rocker locals and hipster students, this bar is a must for anyone who wants to escape from the pulsing cheesy disco music of just about every other bar and club out there. It often has live music, too, and the entry is free.
The bar contains a rare mix of York St John and University of York students, and aging locals! You won’t find that anywhere else, except perhaps Willow on a Saturday.
It is a staple bar on any crawl which ends in Willow, as it is situated just around the corner from the Chinese Disco, so it is good for a nice respite and a cold Treble to numb yourself with vodka before throwing yourself into the sticky, groping, 90’s pop-fueled fray.
The décor is pretty cool in this bar too, the walls are covered with posters of The Beatles, Blondie and the like, and it has a vintage car and an old guitar on the ceiling. Kooky.
Pav Dhande, a politics postgrad, said of the bar: “I’m a fan of the conveniently placed sofa whilst you’re waiting for your friend to come out of the toilet, but also the bar still manages to attract a good few students and is somewhere you’ll visit from first until fourth (or whatever) year! Big fan of the prices, not so keen on how crowded it can get though.”
It has, unless I am wrong, the cheapest trebles in York- £2.50 for a treble vodka or schnapps and a mixer! The bar also serves beers and your typical tipples.
So pick a song on the jukebox, grab a treble, your friends and a few stools upstairs and chat, pre-drink and people-watch whilst listening to some ‘good music’ until your heart’s content.
