SIM-PLY THE BEST
York’s very own Jonny Sim has been called up to the England Futsal Development Squad. For those of you who don’t know, futsal is a form of five-a-side football that was developed in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s.
The goalkeeper, who is now working as Marketing Coordinator for YUSU after graduating with a degree in history, had this to say: “I’m absolutely delighted, it still hasn’t properly sunk in yet. I’ve worked hard at my futsal goalkeeping since I started playing the sport, and it’s great to be recognised for it.
It will be a massive step up, but its a challenge I will relish. I’m really grateful to my teammates past and present, and especially our coach Junior Roberti who has been instrumental in my personal development, not to mention the success of the whole club.
I can’t wait to get started at my first training day next Saturday!” All the team at Vision wish Jonny all the best as he begins his exciting journey with the Development Squad.
COLLEGE RUGBY: DERWENT MAUL JAMES 36-7
Last Wednesday, Derwent thrashed James in a 36-7 mauling to go top of the league and five points clear of second place Halifax. After finishing second to James last term, Derwent have thrown down an early gauntlet as they try and replicate the success that their college have found with the spherical ball this year.
James have in turn sunk to the bottom of the league, but with this being their first game of the term they shouldn’t stay there for long. Vision spoke to Derwent’s blindside flanker, Chris Ilett, for his perspective on the victory: “We were very dominant, several early tries put James on the backseat. After the third try was scored they regrouped under the posts and started playing and challenging us a bit more but they only made it into our 22 once in the first half.
The weather conditions were appalling but nonetheless a great performance by the forwards and backs alike. Jacob ‘Treebeard’ Brook was awarded man of the match for an unstoppable performance including a hat-trick of tries, with Thomas Brent and Cameron Strange also on the scoresheet.”
RUGBY LEAGUE IS HERE
The University of York finally has its own Rugby League team, the York Raiders, thanks to students Chris Corr and Phil Johnson. The two local lads arrived at university keen to get involved with a Rugby League club but were left disappointed by the lack of one.
After being put into contact with each other by York Sport President Cass Brown, they were finally able to set up the Raiders over the Christmas break. The club is now moving at a strong pace with regular training sessions and a Roses date with Lancaster approaching.
In regular contact with BUCS, Chris and Phil hope to enter the Raiders into national competition by next year. They are in talks with local and national companies regarding sponsorship and are excited at the speed the club is starting to progress.
For anyone interested in getting involved, training sessions are run every Sunday from 12pm at 22 Acres. For more information, like UYRL on Facebook, follow @uniofyorkrl on Twitter or visit uniofyorkrl.blogspot.co.uk.
I’m just tired of this constant coverage of my exceptional rugby ability by vision. It’s frankly intrusive and yes, I did used to be captain of Derwent rugby and yes, I do score a lot of great tries and I have had a girlfriend for quite a while now but all that’s irrelevant. It should be about the rugby not just about me, Cameron Strange. Also, my hair.
