Sport in Focus: UYLC

Lacrosse, known as the “fastest sport on two feet”, is one of the most popular sports at York and University of York Lacrosse Club (UYLC) welcomes new and experienced players at any level. President Chris Menon says:

Lacrosse at the University of York provides a successful balance of both in-depth training and high-level competition with an exceptionally sociable and light-hearted environment. If you want to try something new and exciting at University then lacrosse is the sport for you.

Last year was one to remember for all the teams. If there was ever an incentive to join UYLC, look no further than the achievements of the men’s squad. Comprised almost entirely of first-years, they reached the BUCS Cup Final against Durham after a stunning semi-final victory over Hull. It was a brilliant experience and the chances of further success this season are very good indeed. There is also the possibility that a second men’s team will be created this season, opening up even more opportunities.

The club also has over 60 women members and two women’s teams. Both had a very promising year with the second team in particular being boosted by an influx of keen freshers. This was topped off by becoming Dublinfest Champions 2012 over the Easter holidays, before thrashing rivals Lancaster in the prestigious Roses tournament.

Meanwhile, the mixed team went from strength to strength last year, recruiting new members of all experiences to defend their unbeaten record in our organised friendly matches throughout the year. Mixed is not an exclusive team; most players also compete for the men’s and women’s teams, though there is the option to play mixed alone. The team is not set in stone and there are no trials which means everyone is welcome to train.

Of course, UYLC boasts a vibrant and friendly atmosphere both competitively and socially, with themes next term including a graffiti night, fright night and, of course, the infamous FRESHERS FUN night to get all new players integrated to the club.

The target for this year is to finish the BUCS season top of the leagues, although with such good competition this will be no easy task. The key match for the men’s teams will be against Durham, who emerged victorious in last year’s BUCS cup final. With Roses being as important as ever this year, the aim is to demonstrate York’s superiority with three more convincing wins for men’s, women’s and mixed.

UYLC’s fresher taster sessions are taking place in week 2 at the following times:

Monday, 3pm

Wednesday, 11am

Friday, 3pm

Saturday, 11am

Sticks will be provided. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before, because some of last year’s freshers are newly-elected captains!

Final word from Secretary Lydia Labram: “There will also be a Freshers Fair stall up in the Sports Centre so come and meet us on Saturday week 1! We’ll be having some friendly shooting competitions outside so anyone can get involved and have a go!”
